Lorenzo Lazzarini, geologist and professor of applied petrography at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura in Venice, Italy, discusses precious colored marbles that are now installed in the Getty Villa. The stones were imported from Egypt and North Africa (red and green porphyries), Greece (roos and verde antico), and Asia Minor (pavonazzetto) and were set in imitation of the ancient opera sectilia technique. This lecture traces the rare marbles from their origins in quarries throughout the Roman Empire to the walls and floors of the Getty Villa, exploring the history of their use.
